What to put in an email to an Art Director or Agent and what's the hardest part.

Every time I asked experienced professionals this question. I get similar answers. Ps: These days I don’t reach out directly anymore. But I do make an effort to be seen on social media.

  1. Assume no one knows you.

  2. Be friendly and professional.

  3. Show that you’ve done your homework and this is a personal email. It should be. It’s practically courting a partner for the long term. THIS is the hardest part.

  4. Share 3-5 portfolio images in the body of your email. (Portfolio images not a resume, work like the work you want to get)

  5. Don’t make any excuses ( “I’m just starting out etc”... either you’re good enough or you’re not)

  6. Tell them you’d love to work together with them on something specific.

  7. Link to yourname.com , nothing says I’m serious like a website with yourname.com

  8. Link to you social media, at the very least you might get a follower.

  9. That’s all, Good Luck! - Unless you think I’m missing something, in which case please leave a comment :)

This letter is part of a series of notes I’m making about How I market my illustration. I’ve made a Directory page of the topic, where you can see what’s coming up next, and what’s already been covered.

I’ve also started a Discussion page for you to share your own experience ask questions and meet others.
