You can go to the gym and muck around, or you can go with a clear plan. Your results will vary greatly, but the time it will take you is the same. The same goes with how you approach your sketchbook time.

SIDE A

Today I made a specific plan for what to do in today’s sketchbook session. While it. was a plan specific to what I’m working on, I think you could use it for your own practice.

ps: It was a plan for working with paint.

THE PLAN:

  1. Create Color swatches (fun low stakes warm up with a useful end product)

  2. Paint shapes based on reference. (be present, observe, make memories)

  3. Paint simplified versions of the shapes. ( exaggerate and apply taste)

Bonus:

  1. Paint Squares with leftover paint. (useful for drawing comics into in the future)

SIDE B

I used this sketchbook session to prepare my illustration for the 100 day project I’m doing. These are the outcomes.
