I have two ways of using my journal to keep me tethered to my day.
The first is by blocking time, especially time to do deep, focused work. This is about creating a schedule in advance and sticking to it where possible and fixing it when needed.
The second is by logging the events of the day as I go with a timestamp. Interstitial journaling if you like. A method that, ‘Steal like an Artist’ author, Austin Kleon shared in one of his books.
Both result in a retrospective map of a day, something to reflect on, to stay the course, or to make corrections.
And during the day, I feel like an astronaut connected to a spacecraft.
