Subject Matter
Some notes on style by Adam Ming
I started a series of work based on Tom Froese’s Style Class illustration awhile back. The goal of that class was to create 26 images in a similar style.
I had picked “The A-Z of Lord of the Rings for the theme”.
7 days in I had signed up with my illustration agent. She advised me to spend my time on a different subject matter. The thinking was that for my goal of illustrating kids books. I should draw something specific enough but also broad enough to appeal to potential buyers.
The drawings I did instead of ‘The Lord of The Rings’, are going on to get me work.
Bottom line, what you draw is as important as how you draw when it comes to your style.
Thanks for sharing this perspective! I haven’t thought about subject matter as much, but now I will. What did you draw instead of Lord of the Rings? I enjoyed seeing all LOTR ones on Instagram so I’m curious what you switched to
