On Breaking In
I signed up for an online course called My Year of art school. It was a collection of online courses that cost as much as a year of art school, and to me, it was the missing year of art school.
I often read and hear of people who don’t know what to do with their art degree, so they end up working in some other field. The year of art school that I signed up for could have been called the missing year of art school.
It taught me how to think of my art career as a business. I learned how to build a portfolio. I learned the nuance of editorial markets and children’s publishing. And I made friends.
Class ends in 3 months. What then?
I’m going to build my own syllabus. I’m going to figure out what I need to learn and make a plan to learn it. And I’ll do that again the year after and the year after that. And so on. Learning on the job is the best kind of learning.
🗃32. My missing year of art school.
NICE, Adam! I feel like investing in a year (or two or three) from one good instructor/team is propelling me onward and upward. You're a shining inspiration!
I have so many questions! I hope you don’t mind. Where did you take your classes? I’m all about continuing education and some options are better than others!
