On Being a Pro

If you’re working on an illustration, it’s not all drawing.

There’s also the reading and re-reading of scripts and texts.

Marking it up and making it your own.

Selecting a phrase to be the subject of an icon or character.

Using the other words as inspiration.

Picking icons to imply tone and place.

Writing notes and ideas, asking questions, and answering them.

Jumping into the minds of the client, the audience, and the author to set up boundaries for wild and unrestricted creativity.

Tapping into the particular brand of ‘you’ that was hired to do the job.
