I’ve been writing this Daily for 10 months. And I’ve gotten to know some of you through the comments and replies. And I know some of you from various art classes that we might have taken together. And I even work with some of you which is such a privilege for me!
But for some of us, maybe we don’t know each other very well, and I’d like to fix that, sooo…
I’m going to use today’s letter for introductions. I’ll go first, then you can hit ‘Reply’, to introduce yourself personally, or leave a comment to introduce yourself to everybody. I suspect some of you already know each other too :)
Hi, I’m Adam
I make energetic and witty illustrations with a comic sensibility. And now I’ve finished one book working on another two, with 4 more books lined up after that, it’s really a crazy dream come true!
I write a letter daily as an algorithm-free place to connect with you and tell you about my approach and journey to becoming a ‘full-time’ illustrator. I’m writing it for the 20-year-old version of myself who graduated art school without a clue what to do with my ‘gifts’.
For the 20 years since being out of art school, I have spent a decade freelancing (most of it while holding a day job), and another decade as an entrepreneur. I also share in this newsletter the bits that are applicable and have shaped my illustration practice.
I am very early on this journey. And I never want to come across as anything else other than an eager journeyman sharing my experiences, and the things I notice along the way in hope that it may help you along your own exciting journey.
In a sense, this is a competitive industry, it is a dream job of many to be able to spend their days drawing.
But it also feels like it’s not competitive at all because every artist offers something completely unique so in that sense there is no competition. It’s that second sense that allows me to share freely.
Thank you for sharing in this journey you are a great support and encouragement!
Okay enough about me, please tell me about you! (And if you’ve replied before, give me an update!)
Hit Reply or leave a comment :) Looking forward to saying hi to everyone again!
Hi, I'm Sara. I started drawing when I was 26, just one year ago. I started out drawing food (I used to attend cooking classes). I like to use my sense of humor in my drawings. I drew a lot of bananas with sunglasses haha. I never thought about an illustrator career before. I'm Brazilian and I came from the periphery, so it's almost not encouraged at all. My day job is as an executive secretary, I'm practically Pam from 'The Office'. I'm enjoying the learning process and who knows, maybe one day, I'll make my dream come true just like you! Thank you.
