Series: Some notes on style by Adam Ming
Sentences are made of words.
Illustrations are made of icons.
Thinking in terms of icons was one of the major breakthroughs of developing my illustration style. Choosing the right icon is like choosing the right word, it made me become a lot more precise, every icon has a purpose. I was no longer filling pages with meaningless lines shapes and objects. Every icon had it’s place.
The best writing advice I ever got is, “Omit needless words”.
The illustration version of that would be “Use only precise icons”.
