Do you have a day job?
I get asked this often.
Here’s how I think about it.
Within the next 10 years I want illustrations to pay for, my home, car, kids school, holidays, all of it.
So I start now, before I got any illustration jobs, I set aside 2-4 hours a day to work on illustration. I did it as if it was a job and I saw it as my main job. I’m an illustrator I decided.
Then I fill the rest of my time with contract work. (Non illustration) I work hard on the contract part, I make it clear what I offer, but also what I don’t offer.
I don’t offer overtime, I minimize meetings, I just work on a very small defined scope on my schedule where I know I can bring value. (That’s my day job)
My illustration time is getting filled up with illustration work thankfully. But for now, I have no plans to give up the ‘day job’. The suffering of that slog helps me appreciate my illustration work:)
