My mom has a stationery shop on Penang Island. Whenever you buy something she might pack in a little trinket into the package. One of those trinkets was a character of a little boy stamped onto a card.
My wife stuck that card onto the wall with a piece of washi tape. One day I looked at that card and character and said to myself, I like drawing in a style like that.
I wrestled in public with my style. Sometimes posting line drawing icons like these
Other times developing my picturebook illustration style. As I struggle publicly with ‘finding my style’ little did I know that some of my posts were being saved. While I was wondering when this illustration would take off. Authors and art directors and editors were actually looking at my work and matching it to a perfect fit of a project.
A piece here and a piece there was collected. And one day I was shown this collection and told it would be perfect for this book. Which I actually feel is an important book.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that there are no unimportant things. And that our struggles are valuable building blocks to new things.
I also wanted to tell you that this book that I’m working on will be out in September 2022.
