Ai Art and the Artist

It will probably be okay, right?

What is AI Art?

Open Ai, made it’s Ai Art creation tool available to YOU today. Write a sentence or a paragraph and it will make an image for you, an image that’s of higher quality than the average human could produce before this.

Here are a couple of examples of things I made with Dell-E :

Here the AI takes inspiration from one of the DTIYS challenges
And here Ai discovers the moody color palette that I work so hard to escape from

Ai is a nonsense word. It really is.

The best translation for it would be ‘magic’. Just like in a magic trick, if you looked behind the curtain, you would go, “oh", that’s what it is.”

It’s a word we use when we don’t know how something actually works.

So we have this new magic tool, does that mean everyone is now an artist?

Crafting a profession out of being an artist is hard work and some of us might think now that this new tool enables anyone to make art, ‘real artist’’ are going to go out of business.

But real artist still had work when everyone had a pencil.

Real artist always had work when everyone had access to photoshop and procreate. And the internet.

Technology is improving at such a rapid rate, and while it can make things easier, it cannot replace the role of a human creator.

And that role is to see, empathize and share a vision of a brighter future.

I think Ai, might become another tool that I use, but I’m not concerned about being replaced. After all, I know the actual image making is still a small part of the job of being an illustrator. Just like typing is a small part of being a writer.

I’ve been playing with Midjourney this summer and have come to the same conclusion. I think there were similar fears when photography was new, but then Impressionism was born.

I do hope it shakes out like this. I use midjourney to illustrate my substack newsletter quite extensively. It's more evocative and visually arresting than what I could accomplish myself.

I would absolutely prefer to hire a human artist, but don't have the budget to commission someone every week. (if I ever got to a financial position when I could, that's what I'd do)

It developing into useful tools, alongside all the rest, is I think where it'll go - at least in the short term. I'm already finding some interesting instances where AI generated art inspires my writing in a small way: a visual detail here and there.
