There was a moment, just before I ‘broke into illustration’ when I was completely and utterly stumped on what to do next. What I decided to do then was to reach out to a number of illustrators who were ahead of me and ask them how they did it.
One of these illustrators was Tom Froese
I put many of his suggestions(wisdom) into immediate practice. And things started to click for me.
Tom has written a review about his year, and if you only read the successes it would seem like a great year. But what not many people do is shares their failures. But Tom does so here bravely.
Tom tried many things and he succeeded at some and failed at some, but at the start of the year who knows which would succeed? Perhaps each failure is just a seed for future success.
I recommend reading:
The Successes and Failures of a Year in illustration by Tom Froese
Close the gap:
Model yourself after successful people in your field watch what they do and learn from successes and failures.
049: Wisdom in success and failure
Thank you for the recommendation Adam. I enjoyed reading the article, particularly the section on failures, lots to think on
Wow, Adam, another great post - "Perhaps each failure is just a seed for future success" - YES!
Thank you for such a stunning recommended read! I was surprised at the length of Tom Froese's article - on Substack I shy away from reading such long posts - but I was absolutely gripped by Tom's story of his progress. Plenty to learn - I'm not an artist or illustrator, but many of the skills of creatives are eminently transferable. Glad I started my day right here.
